The City Palace Museum is the jewel in the crown of the Udaipur City Palace Complex. It is here that you can immerse yourself in the history of the Maharanas of Mewar, and really get a feel for their culture and how royalty lived. The sprawling museum is actually a series of palaces, including the Mardana Mahal (palace for the royal men) and Zenana Mahal (palace for the royal women).
Construction on the City Palace started in 1559, making it the oldest part of the City Palace Complex. The various rulers continued the work over four and a half centuries, in a number of phases, giving rise to the Mughal and British influences in the palace architecture.
In 1969, the City Palace was opened to the public as the City Palace Museum. This was done out of necessity, in order to generate income and maintain the building after India became a democracy, and royal rulers had to give up their states and fend for themselves. The Museum is now overseen by the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation. The annual World Living Heritage Festival, which takes place at the City Place, is also an initiative of this foundation to preserve Indian heritage and culture.
Jagdish temple is a Hindu temple which is very large in size and is situated in the middle of Udaipur in state of Rajasthan. It is a major tourist attraction which is also known as the temple of Jagannath Rai but is now called the temple of Jagdish Ji.
The temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu who is also known as the preserver of the universe. The temple is celebrated as the largest temple in entire Udaipur. The gateway of the shrine can be seen from Bara Pol of the City Palace which is 150m away. This huge temple is constructed in the Indo- Aryan style of architecture. The temple is three storied and is an example of wonderful architecture. It comprises of beautifully carved pillars, painted walls, decorated ceilings, luscious halls, etc.
Pichola Lake is one of the most beautiful and picturesque lakes of Rajasthan, India. Located in the heart of the city, Pichola Lake is the oldest and one of the largest lakes of Udaipur. In 1362, the beautiful lake was built by Pichhu Banjara during the ruling period of Maharana Lakha. Talking about the dimensions of Pichhola Lake, it is extended to 3 miles in length, 2 miles in width and has depth of 30 feet.
Boat rides in the serene waters of Lake Pichola is an amazing experience. Tickets are available at the City Palace and it costs around INR 400-600 for adults and INR 200 for children. Charges are high for the sunset cruise. The boats have six to eight seats and are covered with a canopy. Life jackets are compulsory to wear. The boat ride starts at Rameshwar Ghat and it first takes you to the Lake Palace Hotel. Then, it proceeds to the Jagmandir where you can stop for some time and reminisce the scenic views. The view of the sunset during boat rides is captivating. The yellow glow of the palaces nearby with their reflection in the water seem to hypnotise.
In the north of the city, about 3km from Lal Ghat, the Saheliyon-ki-Bari was built by Sangram Singh II in 1710. This small, quaint ornamental garden was laid out for the enjoyment of 48 women attendants who came as part of a princess’ dowry and has beautiful, well-maintained fountains (water shortages permitting), kiosks, marble elephants and a delightful lotus pool.
